The Perspectives of Nihilism

Nihilism has different perspectives like:
  • Epistemological nihilism which denies the possibility of knowledge and truth, and is linked to extreme skepticism.
  • Political nihilism which advocates the prior destruction of all existing political, social, and religious orders as a prerequisite for any future improvement.
  • Ethical nihilism (moral nihilism) which rejects the possibility of absolute moral or ethical values. Good and evil are vague, and related values are simply the result of social and emotional pressures.
  • Existential nihilism, the most well-known view, affirms that life has no intrinsic meaning or value.
Nihilism in Russia
  • Many believe that nihilism was first coined by Turgenev in his novel Fathers and Sons (1862) though actually it probably appeared decades ago
  • The book talked about sons rebelling and breaking away from the values of their father particularly the Tsarist regime
  • The youth in Russia was influenced and started rebelling while some tried to push for political changes this didn't occur most likely because they were disillusioned by politics and instead decided to stick to personal changes
  • Another critical point is that nihilism didn't offer any equally balanced alternatives which led to its failure
